在现代英语中，一般不用 great 来指大小。偶有此用法，通常带有感情色彩(如厌烦、恐惧、气愤等)，含有大得出奇或给人印象很深之意。如：

■形容人时，一般不用 large，可用 big，这样用的 big 通常指身大体胖或辈分之大，若用于儿童则含有“长大成熟”之意。如：
His father is a big man. 他父亲是个肥大的人。
He is big enough to go out without his parents. 他已长大了，出去不要父母陪了。
有时 big 可指大人物。如：
He is a big man of the city. 他是市里的要人。
great 指人时侧重指出名或重要，通常译为“伟大的”、“重要的”。如：

■在与抽象名词连用时，要分两种情况：
(1) 用于不可数的抽象名词(即当它表示一般概念时)之前，通常只用 great，不用 big 或 large。如：
great care 非常小心 great sorrow 极为悲伤
great courage 极大的勇气 great importance 极为重要
(2) 用于可数的抽象名词 (即不表示一般概念而是表示某一特定内容时)之前，可用 great 或 big，但不用 large。如：

a big [great] improvement 很大的改进
■与数目或数量连用时，多用 large。如：
a large number of students 很多学生
a large quantity of apples 大量苹果
a large amount of money 大量金钱
有时也可用 great 或 big，但不如用 large 常见。
