The number(数量) of tourists(旅游者) visiting Singapore(新加坡) rose(上升) 12.7 per cent from a year ago to 1.88 million(百万) in the first three months of 2000,due to(由于) an increasing(上升的) number of visitors from Asia(亚洲),official said yesterday.
The largest number of tourists in the first quarter(季度) were from Indonesia(印尼) accounting for(占) 340,448 followed by(随后) Japan with 235,208,the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said in a statement(陈述,声明).
In March alone(仅),the number of tourists continued(继续) to grow at a double-digit(二位数字) rate(速度,比率) of 10.4 per cent from a year ago to 640,692,with visitors(游人) from Asia up by 15.3 per cent.
Tourism(旅游) is a key revenue(主要收入) earner for Singapore.
Singapore's tourism receipts(收入) in 1999 rose 11.7 per cent to 10.01 billion(十亿) Singapore dollars(新加坡元) (US$5.9 billion).
Its goal(目标) for the year is to attract(吸引) a record(纪录) 7.4 million tourists,an increase(增加) of 6 to 7 per cent from 6.96 million last year and topping(高达) the all-time high(有史以来最高) of 7.29 million in 1996.
