I HAVE watched the new "Pride and Prejudice" (《傲慢与偏见》) movie eight times so far. I still can't believe how amazingly good it is.
The characters in the movie are just like they are in the book. After seeing the movie, I read the book. It took me only two days. It is great to read the story as well as see it in a movie. The book is often thought to be one of the best romance novels in Western literature (文学). I think the movie is also a work of genius.
The story is about a family of seven in the early 1900s. This was a time when people had to use a horse and carriage (马车) for transportation. The main character is Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth's mother is obsessed with (着迷于) getting all five of her daughters married. Elizabeth is the second oldest daughter. Her older sister is in love with the rich Mr Bingley. His friend Mr Darcy, who earns twice as much as him, falls in love with Elizabeth.
The most interesting part of the story is when Mr Darcy proposes (求婚) to Elizabeth. She hates him at first and is shocked by his proposal. She rejects him, but realizes very soon that she has made a mistake. But she moves on with her life. Meanwhile, Mr Darcy is still in love with Elizabeth and keeps helping her family. Elizabeth starts to see the good side of him and realizes that her feelings for Mr Darcy have grown. Mr Darcy once again proposes to Elizabeth and she agrees.
The movie is excellent in the way it captures every character in the way they are described in the book. The people are so human that you actually feel like they are real people. It is set a long time ago, but the movie does well to make it feel old. The events of the story are very exciting.
The ending of the movie always keeps me glued to my seat. I wished the movie could have won some awards at the Oscars.
